"Unlike McCandless, however; I have in my backpack a 1:63,360-scale topographic map. Exquisitely detailed, it indicates that half a mile downstream, in the throat of the canyon, is a gauging station that was built by the U.S. Geological Survey." (Krakauer 173)
Topic: Inspiration or Fool?
In this quote we see more on how affected Chris was in not bringing something as simple as a map. He did have a map but as described in the beginning of the book the map was old and did not show of any architecture. This makes me lean more towards Chris being a fool instead of an inspiration in my opinion at the least. Once Chris was ready to leave "the wild" he was stuck by the Teklanika River that was scary looking, especially for Chris given he was afraid of swimming. But had he have had a map he would have saw that the river was not as bad just a little further and that on the other side he would have found the station and could have survived. The story in a whole is inspiring to an extent but the fact that he rally did not put any time into being prepared for his mental trip was the part that I consider being a fool.
